Ear Infections and Chiropractic

Ear pain is the number one reason for child visits to chiropractors. Many chiropractors believe that there is a strong link between the birthing process and recurrent ear infection, also known as otitis media. During the birthing process, cervical (neck) vertebrae can become misaligned, disrupting nerve function, which can affect the eustachian tube. This may lead to fluid buildup in the middle ear and cause otitis media.

Ear infection or otitis media accounts for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States. Antibiotics, the usual treatment, are not always effective and may even lead to a recurrence of ear infections. Many children are dealing with a continuing cycle of repeat ear infections, which lands them back at the pediatrician for more antibiotics. For nearly 100 years, the chiropractic profession has claimed that ear and other upper respiratory infections respond favorably to chiropractic adjustments.

A promising study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. 332 children with chronic ear infections participated in the study. Each child, ranging in age from 27 days to 5 years, was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. The results show that close to 80% of the children did not experience another ear infection within the six-month period following their initial visits. The six-month period included maintenance treatments every four to six weeks. Joan M. Fallon, D.C., the author of the study and the chiropractor who treated the children in the study, states that this pilot study can serve as a starting point from which the chiropractic profession can begin to examine its role in the treatment of children with chronic ear infections.

New Research Sheds Light on Chiropractic and Autism

The research includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in children challenged with autism.

“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system, and the brain” stated Dr. Nicholas Marini, lead author of the paper. “Basic science research shows that the proper development of the brain relies heavily on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age.”

Research has shown not only that the developing brain relies on normal structural integrity and joint movement, but that complex neurochemical communication and pathways involved in helping humans to “feel good” are tied into spinal biomechanics and their related neurological pathways.

“It makes perfect sense when you think about it” stated Stephen Marini DC, Ph.D, a microbiologist, chiropractor and co-author on the paper. “Neurobehavioral disorders such as autism may be related to how the entire body communicates with the brain and the most critical area for this is the spine.”

Some researchers believe that the increase in the diagnosis of such disorders as autism, ADHD, pervasive developmental disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders, have their root in a “perfect storm” of abnormal spinal development.

According to Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study “People’s nervous systems need the constant stimulation of movement in order to develop and function properly. Abnormal position or movement of the spinal vertebra can develop and this can lead to nerve interference. It is this interference, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.”

The child reported on in the study experienced reduced social interaction, altered behavioral patterns, language deficits, and learning difficulties and was diagnosed with autism by a neurologist after other brain pathology was ruled out. The child was up to date with all vaccinations per the recommended medical schedule. The boy had several levels of vertebral subluxations in his spine.

Following 16 weeks of chiropractic care, dietary and supplementation recommendations, a reduction in vertebral subluxation patterns and improved scores on the autism evaluation scale were noted. Improvements in learning abilities, social interactions, language skills, and behavioral patterns were also noted.

The researchers reviewed other studies of chiropractic which demonstrated improvements in autistic patients and call for more research on chiropractic, subluxation and autism.

About the JOURNAL OF PEDIATRIC, MATERNAL & FAMILY HEALTH – Chiropractic: The mission of JPMFH is to disseminate to its reading audience peer-reviewed research and other information dealing with the concepts of health, wellness, and vertebral subluxation as they relate to children, mothering and families. It is devoted primarily to serving the chiropractic profession, other health care providers, the scientific and scholarly communities, and the public at large.

“The Most Important Life Line of them All…”

Fortune tellers read the life line in the palm of a client's hand.  Cardiologists interpret the blipping life lines of a patient's EKG.  But Chiropractors dedicate their work to the most important life line of them all… the spinal cord and its protective covering, the spine.

The spine itself is an engineering marvel. Made up of articulating bones called vertebrae, each segment lines up perfectly with the next to provide both support to your body and protection to the spinal cord.  It's this critical relationship between spinal alignment and the flow of Life through the spinal cord that Chiropractors are devoted to.  Distort the alignment of the spine and you distort the flow of Life through the cord.  Distort the flow of Life through the cord and you distort the expression of health in your body.

For a Chiropractor, smooth lateral curves and plumb postures are more than just simple diagnostic findings.  They’re the validation that Life itself is flowing freely through the patient like a river.  And as long as Life courses through the line, healing is sure to follow.

“Where Do You REALLY Live?”

What do you use to see with?  If you said your eyes… you're wrong.  How about hearing?  If you said ears… wrong again!   You don't see or hear with your eyes or ears.  Those are just end organs for collecting light and sound waves.  To actually see and hear you have to interpret those waves with your nerves and brain (Nerve System) first.

In reality, you LIVE in your Nerve System.  EVERYTHING you experience in life is processed through it… what you see, what you hear, what you feel. That's why Chiropractors care so much about it keeping it healthy.  If your Nerve System is stressed, there goes your ability to interpret your world, and there goes your ability to successfully navigate life.

Regular adjustments keep your Nerve System clear so you can respond to life's challenges in a positive way.  If you're feeling a little foggy, or just disconnected from the world, maybe it's time for some Nerve System house cleaning.  Give your Chiropractor a call today and get reconnected to Life.

Clark Needs a Good Adjustment!

It's a classic holiday movie scene. Clark Griswold stands with bated breath and extension cords in hand as a childlike giddiness overtakes him.  The family drum roll commences, he makes the much anticipated electrical connection and VOILA… nothing happens.

Clark has a power problem.  Although the extension cords are all connected and each individual Christmas light has been inspected with precision, he's still not connected to the source.  It isn't until his wife 'adjusts' an obscure switch in the garage, and turns the main POWER back on that the light show begins.  She'd actually make a good Chiropractor!

If your wiring (nerve system) is connected and your body parts have all been dutifully inspected by the best doctor in the world, you still won't function to your potential if you're not connected 100% to your source… the Life creating power that flows from above, down, inside, out.  Make sure you and your family stay connected to it with regular Chiropractic care during this bustling holiday season.  You glow brighter when your power switch is on.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatica

Doctors of Chiropractic medicine regularly treat sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock that travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity and frequency; minimal, moderate, severe and occasional, intermittent, frequent or constant.
Pain is described as dull, achy, sharp, toothache-like, pins and needles or similar to electric shocks. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness and tingling sensations. Sciatica is also called radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia. A misconception is that sciatica is a disorder - however, sciatica is really a symptom of a disorder.

Caused by Nerve Compression
Sciatica is generally caused by sciatic nerve compression. Disorders known to cause sciatic nerve pain include lumbar spine subluxations (misaligned vertebral body/ies), herniated or bulging discs (slipped discs), pregnancy and childbirth, tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes, constipation, or sitting on one's back pocket wallet.

One common cause of sciatica is Piriformis Syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is named after the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is located in the lower part of the spine, connects to the thighbone, and assists in hip rotation. The sciatic nerve runs beneath the piriformis muscle. This muscle is susceptible to injury from a slip and fall, hip arthritis, or a difference in leg length. Such situations can cause cramping and spasm to develop in the piriformis muscle, thereby pinching the sciatic nerve and causing inflammation and pain.

Treatment Approach
The purpose of chiropractic treatment is to help the body's potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance. Chiropractic care is non-invasive (non-surgical) and drug-free. The type of chiropractic therapy provided depends on the cause of the patient's sciatica. A sciatica treatment plan may include several different treatments such as ice/cold therapies, ultrasound, TENS, and spinal adjustments.

Adjustments
At the core of chiropractic care are spinal adjustments. Adjustments frees restricted movement of the spine and helps to restore misaligned vertebral bodies to their proper position in the spinal column. Spinal adjustment helps to reduce nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica.

Chiropractic the better solution for Headaches

Drugs Cover Up Symptoms
Because headaches are so common, some people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!
Headaches are a sign that something’s wrong.

Common culprits are:
  • Stress
  • Toxic fumes
  • Certain foods, preservatives
  • Alcohol
Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body. All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health. Ask your Doctor of Chiropractic for more information about a care program that may include specific spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, nutritional advice or other conservative methods of care based on your health history, age, current condition and lifestyle.

There Are Many Types Of Headaches
A frequent and overlooked cause of headaches is the malfunction of spinal bones in the neck and upper back.

When bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected. When spinal nerves and related tissues are stretched or irritated they can produce throbbing headaches. Aspirin and medications may cover up these warning signs, but do not correct the underlying structural cause.

Many people experience correction and relief through chiropractic care.
If a thorough examination reveals reduced range of motion, loss of normal spinal curves, or mechanical restrictions, chiropractic care should be considered. After a complete explanation, you’ll receive a care program designed for your unique spinal problem.
Specific chiropractic adjustments can help correct spinal joint dysfunction created by the various chemical, emotional and physical structures of our lives.

Many patients report headache relief. Others find that the correction of their condition takes longer because their spinal problem has existed undetected for many years. Every patient responds differently. Benefit from the drug-free results millions have enjoyed by consulting a chiropractic doctor.

Chiropractic Effects on Heart Health

While most of the focus involving heart health has revolved around diet, exercise and prescription medications, there's some indication that certain chiropractic procedures could help to improve the overall health of the heart. Adjustments to the spine may lower blood pressure in individuals suffering from hypertension and provide a better heart rate for everyone.

Systolic Blood Pressure

In a study conducted by the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush University in 2007, realignment of the atlas vertebrae, also known as the C1 vertebrae of the cervical spine, can help to lower systolic blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension. Systolic blood pressure is the topmost number in a blood pressure reading. It's the pressure felt along the arterial walls when the heart contracts. There appears to be a link between compression of the vertebral artery and an unhealthy elevation in blood pressure. By realigning the C1 vertebrae in the neck, restriction along the arterial wall is relieved and you may experience a decrease in blood pressure. Further studies are necessary to ensure that chiropractic realignment could improve systolic blood pressure.
Diastolic Blood Pressure
The study conducted by the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush University also found that this same realignment of the C1 vertebrae affected diastolic blood pressure, which is the bottom number in a blood pressure reading that indicates arterial pressure when the heart is at rest. The same principles apply to the effect that arterial compression within the spine could lead to an elevation in diastolic blood pressure. When the C1 is realigned, the compression is removed from the artery and thereby lowers diastolic blood pressure.

Heartrate

There's also some indication that adjustments to the cervical spine, which are the seven vertebrae found in the neck, may help lower your heart rate. This is largely due to the eight pairs of cervical nerves located within this area of the spine. The Upper Cervical Health Centers of America believe that interferences within these nerves can cause many health conditions, including those that affect the heart. When the cervical spine is placed in alignment, the nervous system is allowed to better communicate with the rest of the body. In relation to the heart, the improved communication can help bring your heart rate down to a healthy level.

Harvard Agrees with Chiropractic

At first glance you'd think a Chiropractor was responsible for these words.  But they were actually written by a Harvard medical school instructor in the late 1800's.  While this belief is trivialized by the medical and pharmaceutical community today, it remains the core foundation of the practice of Chiropractic.

Chiropractors humbly acknowledge that "the ONLY thing that can heal the body is the Power that created it."  The wisdom Dr. Cabot refers to in his quote is called Innate Intelligence by Chiropractors.   It is the genius of Life that animates our cells, tissues and organs.  It is the coordinating force that maintains our body's intricate chemical balance.  It silently and knowingly orchestrates all steps involved in the healing process from mending a broken bone to putting cancer in remission.  It is in favor of you living, rather than you dying.

The most important job of a Chiropractor is to teach you about this great force and keep you connected to it.  If you want to meet the REAL doctor responsible for healing you, take a look in the mirror.  It’s the one staring right back at you.

Chiropractic may be a Solution for Autism

Individuals with autism are affected in different ways, but all seem to suffer from a triad of impairments: difficulty in interacting with others, impairments in social communication and difficulty thinking imaginatively. An absence of play is often one of the first obvious signs of autism.

The cause of autism is unknown; there are no universally accepted explanations. Current research favors a genetic component, although other factors are also implicated, including environmental triggers and imbalances in neurochemistry.

There is no medication that can ‘cure’ autism. When medication is used, it is to treat a particular symptom of the syndrome. Specialist education often dramatically improves the quality of life for sufferers and their families.

Many chiropractors and other therapists report good symptomatic improvements following treatment.
However, there is little literature available to support these claims.

Autism affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them, particularly with respect to understanding other people's emotional expression. Learning difficulties may further compound the difficulties that they face.

The clinical picture of autism varies between individuals and it is for this reason that the concept of a spectrum of disorders was developed. The spectrum of autistic conditions is wide ranging. It varies from profound disability in some through to subtle problems of understanding in others of apparently average or above average intelligence. The autistic spectrum includes a number of other conditions that may or may not be separate syndromes, notably Asperger's syndrome. A diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome tends to include individuals at the higher functioning end of the autistic spectrum.

A series of chiropractic adjustments on 26 autistic children over a 9-month period. Twelve were found to have a left atlas laterality and 14 had a right atlas laterality. Outcomes from the study were varied but included normalization of deep tendon reflexes and dermatomal subjective sensation, increased cervical range of motion and reduction of other health problems. Many of the children were taken off Ritalin, bladder and bowel control improved, some children started to speak and eye contact and attention span also improved in some children. Hyperactivity and aggressive behavior were reduced in other children and five children were able to attend mainstream classes at school for the first time. Behavioral data, recorded by the teachers and parents, showed significant improvements in most cases.

Fibromyalgia: Debilitating But Treatable With Chiropractic Care

Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (www.f4cp.com), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic, announced today that chiropractic care has been shown to reduce the agonizing pain, debilitating fatigue, and joint stiffness associated with fibromyalgia. While fibromyalgia, a medically unexplained syndrome affecting the muscles and connective tissues, responds to various treatments, chiropractic care in particular has grown sharply in popularity among the millions of sufferers for dramatically reducing chronic, widespread pain and restoring patients to healthier lives.

"Fibromyalgia involves turmoil of the central nervous system, yielding a situation known as central sensitization, which causes heightened nervous system responses," explains Gerry Clum, D.C., spokesperson for the Foundation and president of Life Chiropractic College West University. "Overall health and wellness is affected by an individual's nervous system, an area in which chiropractors are proficiently trained to address, making chiropractic care a viable option for fibromyalgia patients."

While scientists continue to develop a better understanding of fibromyalgia, chiropractors aim to correct misalignments of the spine and pelvis through hands-on adjustments. As joint motion improves, fibromyalgia patients discover that the excruciating pain can be reduced or, in some cases, eliminated. Once this pain is under control, other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia - such as fatigue, sleep deprivation, and depression - also diminish.

“Pharmaceutical False Start”

Spike a fever – run for some Tylenol.  Get an ear infection – dash for an antibiotic.  Big Pharma wants us to race for a drug every time a symptom or illness challenges us.  But is it better to let your body run its own race without interference from the drug companies?

Research reported in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology found evidence that elevated body temperature helps immune cells work harder to fight colds and the flu – so much for lowering fevers with Tylenol.  Still yet another study from the journal Pediatrics reports doctors write over 10 million UNNECESSARY prescriptions for antibiotics every year, dangerously raising the risk of antibiotic resistant infections for society as a whole.
Chiropractor's acknowledge that symptoms are your body's attempt to save itself… not the start of a 100 yard dash to CVS.  Current best practice is to wait for natural responses like fever and inflammation to do their job, instead of 'false starting' with drugs and interfering with what nature knows best.  As long as you're in adjustment (clear Nerve System), your body will innately know how to run its own healing race.

“Clocks and Chiropractic…”

LESS LIGHT!   OK, I can hear all the groaning… we're really stretching it this time.  But in some way this statement is true. The primary purpose of Chiropractic is to locate and correct subluxations.  When you break the word down into it's roots,  SUB-LUX-ATION you get this…

"SUB" – means less than, or lower than normal
"LUX" – is latin for LIGHT and
"ATION" – is a state of being, or a condition

The literal definition of subluxation is a state or condition of less LIGHT or power than normal.  Subluxations occur when spinal bones mis-align and restrict the normal flow of “light” through the spinal cord and nerves.  The effect… your body gets less of the Life energy or “light” it needs from the nerve system to maintain health and vitality.

When Chiropractors locate and correct subluxations, they're removing blockages to the light so it can flow freely through your nerve system, illuminating every cell, tissue and organ in your body.  If sub-lux-ations produce darkness in your health, Chiropractic adjustments bring EN-LIGHTEN-MENT.
So don’t let the shorter, darker days get you down.  Fall back into a healthy Chiropractic routine and keep your nerve system lit up.  Life is brighter when you’re subluxation free.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatica

Doctors of Chiropractic medicine regularly treat sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock that travels into one or both legs.

This muscle is susceptible to injury from a slip and fall, hip arthritis, or a difference in leg length. Such situations can cause cramping and spasm to develop in the piriformis muscle, thereby pinching the sciatic nerve and causing inflammation and pain.
Sciatic nerve compression may result in the loss of feeling (sensory loss), paralysis of a single limb or group of muscles (monoplegia), and insomnia.

Proper Diagnosis
Since there are many disorders that cause sciatica, the chiropractor's first step is to determine what is causing the patient's sciatica. Forming a diagnosis involves a thoughtful review the patient's medical history, and a physical and neurological examination. Diagnostic testing includes an x-ray, MRI, CT scan and/or electrodiagnostic tests (nerve conduction velocity, electromyography). These examinations and tests help to detect possible contraindications to spinal adjustments and other chiropractic therapies.

Treatment Approach
The purpose of chiropractic treatment is to help the body's potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance. Chiropractic care is non-invasive (non-surgical) and drug-free. Flu season wellness plan should include chiropractic care

Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on immune function, the WCA asserts, citing a growing number of researchers who are exploring the common denominators in disease processes, and the role of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems in development of immune related illnesses,
Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body -- including the immune system -- chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function, WCA officials note.

“Contemporary research is beginning to shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms which may explain the outstanding clinical results chiropractors have experienced when managing patients with viral and infectious diseases,” stated Dr. Christopher Kent, WCA Vice President.
Dr. Kent explained: “A comprehensive review of the research literature reveals the current understanding that the brain and immune system are the two major adaptive systems in the body. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system 'talk to each other' and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body."

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don't threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system.

Chiropractors are also aware of the importance of positive health life style practices (rest, drinking ample quantities of water, diet, exercise, proper food choices, use of high potency multivitamins and minerals, and stress reduction approaches) that can also positively influence the nervous system and immune response. According to a large study of the chiropractic profession recently conducted by the Institute for Social Research, Ohio Northern University (McDonald et al., 2003), chiropractors also customarily advise their patients as to the benefits of these other modalities in optimizing overall body function.

“Patience: Healing Zone Ahead”

Construction zones are hectic.  Traffic congestion, safety cones guarding hazardous areas and heavy equipment buzzing everywhere.  It’s amazing anything gets done amid the chaos.  But underneath that chaos is organization:  A team of skilled engineers and contractors carefully working the plan until it reaches completion.  It's similar when you heal under Chiropractic care.

Like a construction zone, organic healing with Chiropractic can appear disorganized and chaotic at times.  You might see an improvement in unrelated aspects of your health before your chief complaints begins to respond.  But like the construction zone, behind the scene is a sophisticated innate wisdom inside you, moving the process forward with a mastery beyond comprehension.

Sometimes care feels like 'stop and go traffic.'  But be patient.  Amid the chaos, healing is happening – with precision and patience, the job is getting done. You’ve got the right plan (Chiropractic Care) and the best engineer (Innate Intelligence) working for you.

An Alternative Therapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by persistent and severe fatigue, and is often associated with difficulty sleeping and concentrating, sore throat, depression, and aching muscles and joints.
In the 1980s, CFS was often dismissed as the "yuppie flu," and people who complained of constant fatigue were told that it was all in their heads or were misdiagnosed with related problems.
The diagnosis remains elusive today. While diagnostic criteria for CFS were developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1994, the cause or causes of CFS are still not clear. People with CFS often have to do their own research and consult several medical experts before a diagnosis can be made.
"I had to work hard to find a doctor who actually understood the illness and believed me," said Marie K. "I would bring all my books and magazine articles with me as I went from expert to expert trying to find help."
When it's that difficult to get a diagnosis, it may be even harder to ask a medical practitioner about alternative or complementary forms of treatment. Although there are no specific conventional treatments for CFS, doctors tend to prescribe low doses of antidepressants, anti-inflammatory agents, antivirals, and immunologically active drugs, such as isoprinosine.

If taking medication for a prolonged period is troublesome to you, or you are simply looking for a way to supplement conventional treatment with some complementary treatment, there are a number of therapies you can try. Because there is no cure at this time, many people with CFS find that the best treatment is more a matter of learning to cope with and alleviate the symptoms.
Work with your medical practitioner to develop a program, but understand that the criteria for feeling better are all subjective, so only you can be the best judge of what's working and what's not.
Chiropractic care and osteopathy are hands-on, adjusting techniques that have provided relief to many people with CFS. Physical therapy may be helpful as well.

Chiropractic works on vitality and good health are due to an unobstructed flow of nerve impulses from the brain through the spinal nerves and throughout the rest of the body. It is thought that when misalignments or "subluxations" occur, such as joint disfunctions, joint adhesions or joint fixations, there is an interference with the normal transmission of nerve impulses. If this continues over a long period of time, there is impaired capability, often accompanied by pain. A chiropractor uses "adjustments"—quick , forceful movements—to change the range of joint movement back to normal.

“It Starts with a Solid Foundation”

A house built on a strong foundation, lasts.  The same goes for your health. If you want a healthy body for Life, you need to start with a solid foundation of health care that can support it for a long time.

Chiropractic's foundation is its Principle which acknowledges we all posses an intelligent, vitalistic force within us that maintains our existence and keeps our bodies working in perfect order.  When this Power is allowed to express itself 100%, we have health.  When the Power is interfered with, we have Dis-Ease.

Eating properly is important, and so is exercise… but if the Power doesn't flow, your house will crumble.
Health built on a foundation of drug therapy is risky and cannot stand for long.  Health build on a foundation that supports the innate wisdom of the body, can weather any storm.  What foundation is your health standing on?

Can Chiropractic Care Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer's?

A slow starvation of the brain over time is one of the major triggers of the biochemistry that causes some forms of Alzheimer’s, according to a new study that is helping to crack the mystery of the disease’s origin.

Robert Vassar of Northwestern University recently found that when the brain doesn’t get enough glucose, a process is launched that ultimately produces the sticky clumps of protein that appear to be a cause of Alzheimer’s. The brain can become deprived of adequate nutrients when its blood flow becomes restricted. “This finding is significant because it suggests that improving blood flow to the brain might be an effective therapeutic approach to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s,” he said.

This is a very exciting prospect of this finding because upper cervical adjustments performed by   chiropractors improve the biomechanics of the cervical spine, which carries and protects the vertebral arteries.

Two vertebral arteries travel up the sides of the neck, into the skull, fueling the brain with nutrient-rich blood. Misalignment of the first cervical vertebra (C1), also called the Atlas, can stretch or apply unilateral traction to these arteries, possibly altering blood flow to one or both sides of the brain.
Receiving Upper Cervical chiropractic care can correct this misalignment, and may be of tremendous benefit to the 10,000,000 baby-boomers who are at risk for developing Alzheimer's Disease in their lifetime.

Chiropractic for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Chiropractic care for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can ease pain by correcting the misalignment between the spine and nervous system. Chiropractic can be effective at reducing the pain associated with TMJ, either when used alone or as a complement to other treatments. This is because, rather than change the diet or modify the teeth, it relaxes the muscles, adjusts the joint and uses specific trigger points to accurately re-position the jaw. When done successfully, this will not only relieve pain in the short run (as would medications or eating soft foods), but it will help prevent TMJ pain from returning.
Chiropractic treatment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) focuses on relieving tension in the muscles around the joints themselves—working both outside and inside the mouth, using massage and trigger point therapy. A trigger point is a very sensitive area made of muscle fibers. Trigger points feel like knots and may cause pain or even a twitching response when pressure is applied to them. A chiropractor can adjust trigger points in such a way to alleviate the pain associated with them.
Trigger points common to TMJ include:
  • Trapezius muscle, located at the base of the neck. Adjusting this trigger point can influence the areas behind the ear, at the temple and at the jaw bone.
  • Sternocleidomastoid muscle, located along the neck from the collarbone to the ear. This trigger point can be used to relieve pain in the forehead, front of the jaw and around the eye socket.
  • Masseter muscle, located at the back of the jaw. This refers to pain in the upper jaw, ear and above the eye.
  • Medial Pterygoid muscle, located behind the molars on the jaw. This trigger point influences pain in the TMJ, as well as in the ear, nose, lower jaw, and the neck.
Adjustments to the joints can also be done by hand, using a technique that causes a tiny stretch inside the joint to release any fibrous attachments made by the body due to previous trauma. The chiropractor may also give the patient home exercises to help strengthen the joint and loosen the tight muscles.
In some cases, misalignment of the jaw that results from improper posture or a back problem can cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. An approach to treating TMJ caused by misalignment in the neck and upper back is to perform chiropractic adjustments on the spinal joint in these areas. In addition, a chiropractor may use massage to relieve tight muscles in the back around the spine. This reduces the amount of stress put on the jaw so that other treatments to adjust the jaw will be more effective.
When these treatments are employed, motion of the jaw joint can improve and symptoms such as ear pain, jaw locking, headaches, and neck pain can be reduced.

Why use Chiropractic for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder?

While there are numerous ways to effectively treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, scientific studies have shown that chiropractic was helpful in cases of TMJ. In a 2003 study, 15 participants were administered treatments with the Activator Method, which uses a tool that delivers high-frequency, low-impact adjustments. All participants showed improvements in the distance they could open their jaws and in pain measurements. Although this group was not compared to a group receiving traditional treatment, it shows that chiropractic treatments like the Activator Method show promise as an emerging treatment for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Many report relief and satisfaction with chiropractic care for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. In a survey of 192 members of a health maintenance organization published in 2003, nearly two-thirds reported using some form of complementary medicine to treat TMJ. Almost everyone surveyed used complementary approaches together with other traditional treatments, and the greatest satisfaction was reported for the hands-on alternative therapies, including chiropractic.
Chiropractic may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment approaches. Medications can include anti-inflammatories, analgesics (pain killers) and muscle relaxants, as well as local injections of corticosteroids in severe cases. Application of hot and cold compresses also reduces inflammation. When teeth grinding or clenching is an issue, wearing a mouth night guard can help prevent these actions during sleep. Bite plates can help correct misalignment. Stress reduction, relaxation techniques, jaw-stretching exercises, and modifying chewing habits are all behavioral approaches that are proven effective.
More research into chiropractic methods used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder are needed; meanwhile, evidence from existing studies as well as patient testimony suggest that chiropractic therapies are helpful in relieving TMJ symptoms.

“Garbage in Your Nerve System”

What would happen if your garbage didn’t get picked up for a few weeks? Your house would get pretty stinky wouldn't it?  The same can be said for you, if your Nerve System garbage isn't dumped regularly too.
Physical, chemical and emotional stresses that accumulate in your Nerve System are called Subluxations (Chiropractic term for nerve interference).  If not cleared regularly, stress from Subluxations can spill over into your body and cause poor sleep, fatigue, weakened immunity, chronic pains, anxiety or poor digestion.
People who keep their Nerve System 'clean' with regular Chiropractic adjustments report having more energy, better recovery from injuries and an improved state of mind.  If you’re feeling sluggish, weak and bogged down, maybe it’s time to dump your nerve system garbage. Get to the Chiropractor today!

Are Chiropractic and Massage Therapy complementary?

Chiropractic and massage therapy, used in combination, form a powerful healing approach that addresses pain on many levels. Both long-term muscle tension and sudden impacts, such as falls, can pull and hold joints out of normal alignment. Chiropractic uses adjustments to return the joints to their normal positions and restore joint mobility. Joint misalignments or subluxations, are often accompanied by tension or injury to the surrounding muscles, and ligaments.  These tissues can produce pain that spreads because it causes protective muscle tightening in surrounding areas. Over time, tight, inflamed muscles and fascia suffer poor circulation and can develop adhesions that prevent muscles from lengthening completely. Painful trigger points can also develop, referring pain or tingling to other areas in the body. Addressing soft tissue problems is an important complement to chiropractic care. Muscles move joints, while ligaments support them. If a subluxation is adjusted without addressing related soft tissues, the whole problem is not being addressed and the pain and dysfunction may persist.

Chiropractic:
  • Drug Free, non-invasive, hands-on, natural.
  • Works by aligning your spine through adjustments to ensure that messages flowing constantly between the body and the brain are not blocked.
  • Initial examination locates areas of nervous system misalignment, which are then adjusted to reduce interference and promote good health.
  • Assessment of spinal problems can identify more serious conditions, which require different intervention.
  • Helps the nervous system to work the way it should, thereby assisting with increased blood flow to muscle and tissue, relieving numbness, weakness and pain.
Massage Therapy:
§         Drug-free, non-invasive, hands-on, natural.
§         Works by changing the condition of soft tissues, muscles, tendons and connective tissue through the application of external pressure.
§         Increases blood and lymphatic circulation.
§         Relieves muscle spasms and cramps.
§         Promotes a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, make it especially helpful for people dealing with anxiety and stress.

Chiropractic and Massage Therapy are actually two very different forms of natural therapy. You can, depending on the circumstances, obtain relief from either method. However, the best long-term way of keeping your body in a state of optimum health is to combine the two.

Flu Shots and Airport Security

When anything other than food enters your body, it gets 'screened' in the mucous membranes of your nose, mouth and gut with suspicion and rejected if necessary… like TSA Agents screening luggage for dangerous materials before they're allowed on a plane.  Sneezing, runny noses and coughs are your body's natural way of preventing harmful dust, germs and foreign chemicals from 'getting on board.'

When you INJECT foreign virus material and chemicals from a flu shot directly into your body, this natural innate screening process is bypassed and hazardous materials are allowed to pass freely into secure areas, like your blood stream and soft tissues.  The potential for trouble begins.

How comfortable would you feel getting on a plane knowing the bags didn't get X-Rayed first? If your answer is 'not very comfortable' then consider how safe your body feels when chemicals in the flu shot like Mercury (in the form of Thimerisol), Formaldehyde and Glycol are allowed bypass your body's check-in and go for a ride inside you.  There are safer, natural ways to protect yourself from the flu this year.  Ask your Chiropractor how.

Chiropractic Care for Seniors

A three-year study of senior citizens over 75 years of age revealed that seniors who receive chiropractic care spend fewer days in hospitals and nursing homes than elderly non-chiropractic patients.

Senior citizens under chiropractic care report better overall health, have fewer chronic conditions, and are less likely to use prescription drugs than non-chiropractic patients.

The senior chiropractic patients were more likely to exercise vigorously and more likely to be active in the community.

87% of senior citizens under chiropractic care described their health status as good or excellent, compared to only 65% of non-chiropractic patients.

Chiropractic patients spend 15% less time in nursing homes and 21% less time in hospitals than the non-chiropractic patients.

As the popluation ages, more people are consulting doctors of chiropractic, especially in their later years. As we live longer, there are growing concerns about over-medication and the side effects of combining various prescription drugs. Safe, natural chiropractic care is growing in popularity. Restoring proper nerve and spinal function can help improve mobility, vitality, and endurance, and therefore the quality of life.

You Won’t Hear This on the Radio

Ever notice that you rarely hear prescription drug commercials on the radio?  Television's a different story.  Every other commercial on TV is for a pill to fix your stomach problems, sleep disturbances or allergy.  They all end with a monologue of side effects, voiced over a distracting video of happy people playing in the background.  You can't pull off that off on radio.

The FDA has urged pharmaceutical companies to stop using distracting images and music in their TV drug ads following complaints that manufacturers deliberately used misleading techniques to downplay their products' risks while emphasizing potential benefits.  We have a better solution.

When a drug commercial comes on TV just close your eyes and LISTEN…  The side effects will be more apparent (and disturbing) when you're not distracted by the 'pretty visuals.'  Big Pharma doesn't want you to think about the risks associated with taking their drugs.  But if you close your eyes and listen closely, you'll learn how ridiculous, dangerous and deadly their products can be.

How Does Chiropractic Help Your Immune System?

The benefits of chiropractic care for your health are numerous.
Some of the many benefits include pain relief in your joints, back, or head. Others may include increased mobility, performance, balance, coordination or energy.

Our Creator God has given us all the power of health within our own bodies enabling your body to heal itself. It is not normal or healthy to have chronic pain or even the occasional cold or headache. A person can be unhealthy without any symptoms whatsoever. For example, 35% of all heart attacks happen without any prior symptoms or warning signs. Were those 35% healthy the day before their heart attack?
Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don't threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system. For example, nerve cell endings in the skin and white blood cells of the immune system are in intimate contact, and chemicals secreted by the nerves can shut down immune system cells nearby.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

During an immune response, the brain and the immune system 'talk to each other' and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body. If the Nervous System is not functioning properly, then the Immune System cannot function at 100%, thus the body becomes fertile ground for bacteria, viruses and illness
Children who have regular Chiropractic adjustments have fewer colds, ear infections and flu. People who receive regular chiropractic adjustments have immune system competency that is 200% greater than those who don't. Even though you are not sick, your body may be acquiring misalignments of the spine (subluxations) that are interfering with your nervous system and thus your immune system. Regular chiropractic check-ups can help you to maintain a healthy immune system and stave off illnesses or allergies. A chiropractic adjustment will restore the balance of your nervous system and restore the flow of energy and information throughout the body, thus validating one of the great benefits of chiropractic care!

Nothing Organic About a Flu Shot

Spray pesticides on an apple and it's no longer organic.  Add a drop of oil to a glass of spring water and it's no longer pure.  Most Americans detest the idea of dumping chemicals in a pristine, natural environment.  But why not have the same aversion when it comes to getting the flu shot?

Maybe it's because you don't realize what's in it:  Mercury (a known neurotoxin in the form of thimerisol),  Glycol (a component in antifreeze) and Formaldehyde (the stuff they preserve cadavers with).  If you dumped those chemicals in your local water supply you'd get arrested.  But every year, unknowing Americans line up at CVS to get this stuff injected into their veins.

Given the choice to eat an organic apple vs. one blasted with toxic chemicals, you know which one you'd rather take a bite out of.  Question is, would you take a bite out of yourself after getting injected with the ingredients in the flu shot?  There are natural, alternative ways to boost your immune system and protect yourself from the flu.  Ask your Chiropractor what they are so you can keep your body ORGANIC this season.

The Real Doctor in the Rearview

The whitecoats say you have allergies, asthma, sleep apnea, depression, chronic fatigue, GERD and fibromyalgia.  They say you'll be on a dozen different medications for the rest of your life.  But what does the doctor looking back at you in the mirror say?

The doctor in the mirror says you have an innate wisdom inside, capable of RE-CREATING a healthier version you.  A 'you' without allergies, asthma, sleep apnea, depression, chronic fatigue, GERD or fibromyalgia.  That doctor is just waiting for you to remove the roadblock.

Health is your birthright.  Health is your natural state.  Health is what you get when you have a clear nerve system.  Don't be imprisoned by the whitecoat's diagnosis, it's merely a temporary state.  Find a Chiropractor who works for the doctor inside of you and you'll leave sickness and dis-ease behind in the dust.

“Back to Basics”

“God breathed into man the breath of life—we add—and left within, a body manager to regulate body functions including reproduction of cells.  There is a power within you—you recognize it in others as the ability to move-see-hear-speak breathe.  What is this power?  Who can answer?  We call that power INNATE INTELLIGENCE.  You look around you and recognize there is a power that governs and controls the universe and all things in it. You may call it NATURE or you may say it is AN ACT OF GOD.  But whatever you choose to call it, you do recognize a FORCE.

“Within YOU is a ‘grain’ of the universal power.  If there were not, you would cease to move, see, hear, breathe, feel—exist as a HUMAN INTELLIGENT BEING.  As long as that power within you has control of your body a state of HEALTH exists.  Should something interfere with normal control of that internal power—then you cease to enjoy your birthright—HEALTH—instead a state of dis-ease becomes prominent.
“Healing is a process afforded you by your Creator and is above and beyond the control of man.  Your Chiropractor does everything possible to help Innate heal—but he cannot heal nor can anyone else produce healing for you.  When the right adjustment is made, Innate goes to work.  You feel the results when dis-ease turns to ease.”  – BJ Palmer

“Can You Hear Me Now…”

Did you know the first adjustment ever given wasn’t for back pain, neck pain or headaches? Here’s how it all started as told by our founder Dr. D.D. Palmer in 1895…
"Harvey Lillard, a janitor, in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf.
An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half hour's talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before.
There was nothing 'accidental' about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing 'crude' about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it."  Thus Chiropractic was born!
.
Now imagine if Harvey still needed a hearing aid after September 1895.  Your Chiropractor wouldn’t be adjusting you today.  Good thing D.D. was a great persuader!

Medicine vs. Chiropractic......a battle over 100 years old!

medication or pharmacological drugs to reduce pain or relieve symptoms. However, in medical care, patients are prescribed pharmacological drugs to provide pain relief. In addition, there could also be the possibility of invasive procedures, like surgery.
·  Chiropractic care is focused mainly on detecting and setting right the cause of the problem or pain, while medical care focuses mainly on providing relief from symptoms and later might get involved in fixing the root cause of the pain.
·  Chiropractic care is holistic in nature and concentrates on the wellness of the patient. It strongly believes that the human body has an inherent ability or potential and tendency to heal itself, while medical care believes that drugs and invasive treatment are required to cure or treat a patient from illness.
·  Chiropractic care revolves around the fact that the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, are responsible for most of the functions in the human body and any pain or problem in the patient has its root cause in these areas. Chiropractors believe that these disease conditions can be cured by employing various gentle spinal cord maneuvering techniques and setting the structure of the spine right. Medical care, on the other hand, treats each individual body part or organ separately and treatment is based on the disease rather than the cause. This is a fundamental different in comparing chiropractic vs medicine.
·  Another important factor in the chiropractic vs medicine comparison is that there are no side effects in chiropractic care, since there is no requirement for drugs. However, in medical care, the threat of toxic drugs used to ?cure? disease and their side effects always loom large on the patient?s health.
·  Above all, chiropractic treatment is safe and does not involve any organ removal or surgical interventions, which is not the case in medical care, where organ removal through surgery is a normal course of action when all else fails.

Adjustments Can Lower Your Blood Pressure!

Chiropractic adjustments work to harmonize the body's natural systems by realigning the spinal bones and removing pressure and congestion within the nervous system. This process decreases the physiological stress response and restores optimal function and healing to the body. Along with many other health issues, chiropractic care has shown to consistently achieve remarkable results in helping to stabilize blood pressure.

The nervous system is what allows our internal physiology to adapt to the stresses and demands of the external environment. The skull and spine surround and protect the nervous system and bear the consistent stress of gravity every day. When the external stressors become too great there is compromise in the spinal structure and resulting interference in the nervous system. This interference is termed subluxation. Subluxation causes the nervous system to move out of balance and towards sympathetic (fight or flight) dominance. This process increases stress hormone secretion, inflammatory processes, and blood vessel tone. For many individuals this results in higher blood pressure. Chiropractic adjustments remove subluxation and restore harmony to the nervous system allowing the body to stabilize and heal appropriately.

In 1988, a double blind study of 75 patients was performed to fully analyze the reports that chiropractic care could help stabilize blood pressure in patients. Within this study, one group of patients with elevated blood pressure received adjustments to the thoracic spine area. Another group received placebos (movements that seemed to be adjustments but were not), and a 3rd group received no treatment. The result was that the adjusted group experienced decreases in both systolic & diastolic blood pressure while no change was noted in either the control or placebo group.

What does it take to save a Life?  Do you need to pull a helpless swimmer from the ocean or perform CPR on a drowning victim to qualify?  Or can something as simple as sharing your Chiropractic story with others count too?

If your story helps someone find a solution for their debilitating migraines… you just saved a Life.   If your story empowers a family member to reduce their prescriptions, and lowers their risk of becoming another 'drug error' statistic… you just saved a Life.  If your story encourages a friend to stop blindly placing their health in the hands of doctors, and start placing the Doctor inside them in charge of their health… then you just saved a Life.

Do you have the power and capability to save a Life?  If you know the Chiropractic story, you bet you do!  The question is will you?  You can't be a Chiropractic Life saver if you don't spread the word.  So please, don't keep your story a secret.  Tell others how your Life has benefited from Chiropractic care.  You'll be saving someone's Life when you do.

“Spine Low on Adjustments?”

What would you do if your car's low oil light came on today?  Would you top off your engine with some 10W-30 weight or put some black tape over that little annoying light so you wouldn't have to deal with it any more?

Ignoring the warning sign will cause your engine to seize down the road. And if you were checking the dipstick regularly and adding oil when needed, the light might not have come on in the first place.  The same goes for your spine and regular Chiropractic check ups.

When your spine gets too low on adjustments, pain is the warning light. Unfortunately by the time the pain shows up you've been out of adjustment too long.  If that's the case, don't 'black tape' the pain with Tylenol or any other pain killer for that matter.  Bring your spine in for a proper Chiropractic Adjustment today and avoid a catastrophic seize event tomorrow.

“We’re All in the Same Boat…”

We have lots of patients who thank us everyday for giving them their health back.  They say things like 'doc, you really did a great job…' and 'doc, you helped me when no one else could.'  But the truth is… we can't take all the credit for it.
While medicine gives most of the credit for healing to the physician or the drug, Chiropractors see it as a team effort with three key players – the Chiropractor who clears interference from the nerve system, the innate wisdom within the patient which orchestrates the healing and the patient who practices good lifestyle habits to support the process.
We're ecstatic when you see results from our service.  But never forget, we're not the only one rowing the boat.  There are two other oarsmen pulling in unison…  and together we make the perfect, healing team!

“When Your Lights are Out…”

Ever have one of those days where you just don't feel as bright as you should?  Your diet's good, you're getting enough exercise but for some reason you still feel drained and unproductive.  Maybe it's time for a trip to the Chiropractor…

Think of your Nerve System as electrical wires and your body a 100 watt light bulb connected to it.  When the wires are clear and electricity flows freely, your bulb glows to 100 watts.  But if power is restricted in the wires, your bulb dims.  Chiropractors call it being Subluxated or in a 'state of less light/less energy.'  And the only thing that can 'light you up' again is a specific, loving Chiropractic Adjustment.

Eating properly and getting enough exercise is important, but you'll never shine to your full potential if you're Subluxated… and you can't afford that.  The world needs you beaming at 100 watts.  So don't wait until your light's completely out… get adjusted and shine bright with regular Chiropractic care!

Recently, fibromyalgia patients have been seeking chiropractic care increasingly often. Because fibromyalgia causes numerous tender points all over the body, many fibromyalgia patients suffer from back pain, neck pain, and leg cramps. In an attempt to solve these problems, many sufferers have looked to chiropractors. Because simple adjustments to the neck and spine can restore the carriage of the whole body, a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers find that alignments of the spine can significantly reduce pain all over their bodies.

Upper Cervical Spinal Stenosis
Many fibromyalgia patients suffer from a condition called upper cervical spinal stenosis. This causes the coverings of the upper spine, known as meninges, to become compressed. This can cause severe, debilitating pain all over the body. Chiropractors can adjust the head and neck so the spine is no longer compressed, helping to relieve the widespread pain symptoms of fibromyalgia.

How Effective is Chiropractic Care in Fibromyalgia Patients?
Numerous studies have been conducted analyzing the benefits of chiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients. A 1985 study asked 81 fibromyalgia patients to indicate drug or alternative treatments that best relieved their pain. Chiropractic care treatment scored surprisingly high in this study. Another study examined the effectiveness of spinal adjustments in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After just 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less pain and fatigue, and actually enjoyed better sleep quality.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care For Seniors

Many seniors are unaware of the outstanding benefits that are possible through regular chiropractic care. Below is a list of seven of the most frequent benefits that chiropractic care provides for seniors.

1. Pain Relief
Chiropractic care is one of the most effective and safest forms of health care to treat pain due to spinal related conditions. Chiropractic is so effective because most causes of spinal disorders are related to abnormalities of the spine and the surrounding soft tissue structures. Doctors of chiropractic are specifically trained to identify and treat subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) and their subsequent effect on the central nervous system. Anti inflammatory medication and pain relievers merely mask the symptoms and have many undesirable side effects.

2. Increased Range of Motion of the Spine and Extremities
Chiropractic care has been shown repeatedly to increase not only the range of motion of the spine but also in the extremities. Increasing a person's range of motion can positively and drastically affect lives in many ways. For some, an increased range of motion means being able to bend down to pick up their grandchildren. For others, it means they can garden without pain or get an extra 40 yards of distance out of their driver on the golf course. In many cases, an increase in range of motion immediately follows chiropractic adjustments. This is one of the reasons why many top professional sporting teams have team chiropractors.

3. Increased Balance and Coordination
Many problems in balance and coordination in the aging population have been shown to come from injury or degenerative changes to the cervical spine (neck region). Structures known as mechanoreceptors are located in the posterior (back) joints of the cervical spine and are responsible for providing the brain with essential information important for balance and coordination. Mechanoreceptors in cervical posterior joints provide major input regarding the position of the head in relation to the body. With aging, mild defects impair mechanoreceptors function and results in a loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness). With decreased proprioception, body positioning in space is impaired and the patient becomes reliant on vision to know the location of a limb. To compensate for the loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness) in the legs, the feet are kept wider apart than usual. Steps become irregular and uneven in length. As impairment increases, the patient becomes unable to compensate. With severe loss of proprioception, the patient is unable to get up from a chair or rise after a fall without assistance.
Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help restore balance and coordination by stimulating the joint receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the cervical spine. This stimulation is thought to restore or normalize joint receptor functioning which leads to improvements in balance and coordination.

4. Decreased Joint Degeneration
A subluxated (misaligned) spine is much like a misaligned wheel on an automobile. This misalignment will cause the spine (and the wheel) to wear out prematurely. Since all moving parts will eventually wear down over time, it is very important to get your spine aligned periodically. Chiropractic care decreases spinal degeneration and other arthritic changes by normalizing the spinal alignment and reducing spinal stress.

5. Increased Health and Well-Being
We commonly ask our patients what changes they notice once they are put of pain. Here are some regular responses we hear every day:
I feel great!

I can sleep through the night!
Now I can play in the garden!
I have so much energy!
Life is worth living now!
Yes, chiropractic is far more than mere pain relief.
Feeling good, staying healthy and doing the things that make us happy are what keeps us looking forward to each new day. Regular chiropractic care increase the quality of life and increase health and well being.

6. Decreased Incidence of Falling
Injuries due to falling are extremely common in the elderly population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for 90% of the 850,000 bone fractures which occur annually among Americans past the age of 65. Chiropractors reduce the risk of falls by normalizing the mechanoreceptors of the cervical spine by administering chiropractic adjustments. They also prescribe stretching and exercise programs to increase strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination.

7. Keeps Seniors Out of Nursing Homes
While studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, I had the opportunity of meeting the president Dr. Ian Coulter. Dr. Coulter was involved with many research projects studying the benefits of chiropractic care and exercise.
In 1996, he published an interesting study in the Journal, "Topics of Clinical Chiropractic" called "Chiropractic care for the Elderly."
The key points he noted in this study were:

o 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic care group
o those who used chiropractic care were more likely to do strenuous levels of exercise
o at three years follow-up, less than 5% of those who used chiropractic care lived in a nursing home while a staggering 48% of those who did not use chiropractic care did live in a nursing home
o at three years follow-up, only 26% of those who used chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48% of those in the non-chiropractic group

There is no need for seniors to suffer needlessly. Chiropractic provides amazing benefits and has an outstanding record of safety and effectiveness. Ask your family and friends for a chiropractor that they recommend. Take action now and make an appointment to see if chiropractic can help you!
