One adjustment and a bottle of windex

If you've ever tuned into the A&E television program Hoarders, it doesn't take a genius to quickly realize it's going to take more than a bottle of Windex to clean up all the garbage, moldy food and rotting animal poop that's been accumulating in those houses for years and years and years...

But some people accumulate health problems the same way, and unrealistically believe it will take just a visit or two at the Chiropractor's to fix all their issues.  From years of neglect, bad advise and denial, their chronic illnesses pile up until they can no longer recognize the healthy state their body used to be in.  By the time they decide to see a Chiropractor, they've got a real 'dis-ease hoarding' problem and unfortunately one adjustment isn't enough to clean up the squalor.

The goal of Chiropractic isn't to temporarily sweep your symptoms under a rug to make things look good on the surface, but to actually roll our sleeves up and get rid of the underlying clutter once and for all.  Sure it might take a little more time and a bit more elbow grease to transform your health our natural way, but in the end your human house will be clean, pristine and habitable again. Would You Like To Sleep Like This Again?

Did you know that 40 percent of the population currently suffers with sleeping problems?  It isn't uncommon for Chiropractors to find a misalignment of the first two cervical vertebrae, the atlas and axis, in people who suffer from sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea.

Since a good night's sleep is one of the most important requirements for complete healing, restoring normal sleep is a desired effect of any Chiropractic care plan.  It's common for many regular Chiropractic clients to see an improvement in sleeping habits within the first week of care, regardless of the condition they come in with.  Sleeping better is a common 'side effect' when normal alignment is restored at the C1/C2 area, and no drugs have to be involved!

A misaligned atlas or axis can be determined with simple Chiropractic tests like Thermography, Upper Cervical X-Rays or posture analysis.  If you know someone suffering with poor sleep, tell them to save their money on a new pillow and have their upper neck evaluated by a chiropractor.  If we can get you sleeping better, we can get you healing better.

Surging your way into sickness.....

What would happen if you plugged 10 appliances in one outlet and turned them all on at the same time? You'd blow a circuit, right!  Well, the same thing could happen if you surge your 'nerve circuits' with too much STRESS...

Picture your nerve system as an electrical outlet with multiple stresses plugged in.  Turn on all those stresses at the same time and POW, you'll quickly overload your system, blow a circuit and fry your state of health!  Chiropractors call this situation a Subluxation.  Depending on what nerves (circuits) are involved, you can experience symptoms from mild aches and pains to more significant health problems like High Blood Pressure (Journal of Human Hypertension 22,1 G Bakris, MD et al).  So how can you avoid the dangers of stress surge?

Although it's impossible to eliminate all stress from your life, you can stay ahead of their negative, accumulative effects with regular Chiropractic Care.  Your Chiropractor performs his or her job much like an electrician... skillfully checking your nerve system for overloaded circuits and turning them back on so you won't experience an interruption in your state of health and wellness.  When it comes to basic, preventative care, nothing beats 'keeping your Power on.'

Allergy Relief Through Chiropractic Care?

The next time you sneeze, it may be a good time to visit a chiropractor. Yes, a chiropractor. Most people never think about it, but chiropractic care can help provide allergy relief.
That’s because chiropractic care, often thought necessary for only back and neck problems, can help with keeping the body operating at peak performance. The body’s immune system helps with preventing disease and infection, dealing with stress and overall well being. The immune system also tackles the invasion in a body of foreign substances such as pollution, dust, dead cells, etc. Current research is showing that there is a direct link between the nervous system and the immune system. Chiropractors remove nerve interference and allow the immune system to work optimally.
The immune system is affected by nerves and hormones. An immune system not operating effectively can:
  • Fail to recognize and remove abnormal cells such as those that are cancerous.
  • Be unable to fight infections.
  • Overreact to things such as bee stings, penicillin, certain foods, pollen etc.
  • Become depressed making you more vulnerable to disease.
Allergic reactions are the most frequent immune disorders and happen when the body’s immune system overreacts to allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander, etc. The response is that the body overproduces neutralizing chemicals such as histamines to correct the problem.
What causes allergies? No one knows for sure. Some theories say it’s our increasing sterile environment. Others suspect the overuse of antibiotics and vaccinations. The idea here is our immune system is at its best when fighting off disease, parasites, and bacteria all by itself. The more we try and help it, the weaker it becomes. It is proven that children who live on farms and are exposed to different animals and the outdoors have fewer allergies than those who are not exposed.
Traditional allergy treatments only deal with the symptom without addressing the cause. This is because western medicine has no cure for allergies. Worse yet, antihistamines used over time or combined with other medication can be deadly.

But just how can chiropractors help with such problems?
The answer is simple, chiropractic care releases stress on a patient’s nervous system. This allows the immune system to operate more effectively, which is beneficial to anyone and especially those suffering from allergies.
The chiropractic approach is to remove subluxations, a term for a misaligned spinal vertebra pinching a nerve. Subluxations place stress on the nervous system. Free from nervous system stress, your body will work more effectively to neutralize the allergy-causing chemicals in your environment.

No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health can be as important for your overall healing as proper nutrition. Are you and your family carrying the vertebral subluxation complex in your spines? Only a chiropractic spinal checkup will tell. A healthy spine can improve your life – see your chiropractor for periodic spinal checkups.

Backpacks VS Pulling Luggage

It’s well understood that heavy backpacks are taking a heavy toll (excuse the pun!) on adolescent spines. A recent standing magnetic resonance imaging study by the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University of California, at San Diego revealed that: “Increasing backpack loads significantly compressed lumbar disc heights measured in the midline sagittal plane” and that: “student subjects reported significant increases in back pain, associated with increasing backpack loads from 4, to 8, and finally to 12 kgs of carried weight”.

Initially, neutral posture was measured in a standing position. All children were then asked to walk a predetermined route without intervention for approximately 7 min. This was followed by walking the same route with either a backpack or trolley. Deviations from neutral of the thoracic and lumbar spine (flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation) from the final 30 s of the imaging sequences were taken and analyzed.

Compared to unburdened walking, walking with a backpack led to a statistically significant increase in thoracic extension and right lumbar lateral flexion and a statistically significant decrease of lumbar flexion. In contrast, walking with a trolley increased extension, right lateral flexion and right rotation of the thoracic spine, and led to a statistically significant increase in left rotation of the lumbar spine. Comparing the backpack and trolley groups showed a statistically significant increase in thoracic extension and right lumbar lateral flexion in the backpack group. Posture during trolley pulling was characterized by a statistically significant increase in right thoracic and left lumbar rotation.

Participants adopted asymmetric postures during walking with a backpack and pulling a trolley. However, the trolley group was characterized by spinal rotation which possibly adds an extra source of stress. This suggests that school children should use backpacks rather than trolleys when the weight is within recommended limits.

"Treating the Bark vs. Adjusting the Cause"

You walk into your Chiropractor's office, hop on a table and point to where it hurts... expecting to get adjusted right in that very spot.  But the Chiropractor starts working on a totally different part of your spine, not even close to where you feel the pain.  Why is that?

There's an old saying that goes when you step on a dog's tail, it barks out the other end.  In Chiropractic that means, where you hurt (the bark) isn't necessarily where the problem is (the tail).  Many times the pain you feel in one area is actually a referred symptom from somewhere else.  For example, someone with sciatica may feel  pain down their leg, but the source of their problem is a Subluxation (vertebral misalignment) in their spine.

Chiropractors recognize that if you remove the cause of someone's symptom, the body will no longer have a need to produce it.  That's why the main focus of a Chiropractic visit is to locate and correct the underlying problem, and not the superficial effect.  Chasing after symptoms is like a dog chasing after its own tail.  You only end up spinning around and around until you get dizzy, confused and frustrated.  It's much smarter to address the underlying cause.

Chiropractic Care Known to help children and adults with ADHD

You may have been told that chiropractors treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Well, that’s just not the case. Chiropractors don’t “treat” ADHD. But, chiropractic care can definitely help children, and adults too, who suffer from it. The reason why chiropractic treatment is effective is that ADHD is a neurological disorder. Chiropractic adjustments are not only effective in reducing nervous system disturbances in general, but an adjustment can be intentionally directed to stimulate under-active areas of the brain and calm over-active areas as well.
Because a chiropractic approach to ADHD is natural and drug-free, a large number of parents choose chiropractic care over the conventional medical practice of giving children Class 2 psychotropic drugs that have intense side effects including personality changes and permanent alterations in the brain. The vast majority of parents who’ve opted for chiropractic treatment for their children have noted marvelous behavioral changes as a result.
Due to the differences between the manner in which boys and girls use the two hemispheres of their brain, ADHD seems to occur in more boys than girls and, additionally, for the same reason is often more easily observable in the behavior of boys than of girls. Some of the symptoms that are most prominent include difficulty concentrating and sitting still, lack of ability to control impulsive thoughts and behaviors, easily distracted by noises and activities, constant movement of fingers, hands, arms, feet, or legs.
Quite a few children who manifest ADHD symptoms are hypersensitive to certain foods, such as dairy or gluten products, and sugars and artificial sweeteners. Furthermore, they generally have a hypersensitive reaction to additives in foods, herbicides and pesticides used to grow non-organic fruits and vegetables, and laundry products such as detergents, fabric softeners, and other chemicals. Often, the removal of these environmental agencies can go a long way in reducing ADHD symptoms.

Vince Lombardi and Principle #6

"The Green Bay Packers never lost a game.  They just ran out of time..." - Vince Lombardi.  Coach Lombardi's quote sums up his unwavering belief in his team's ability to win every game, if given enough time to execute their winning game plan.  Chiropractors hold a similar, unwavering belief in your body's Innate potential to fight off illness...

The Sixth Principle in Chiropractic states "there is no process which does not require time," including the healing process.  BJ Palmer (the developer of Chiropractic) believed that given enough time, and a clear nerve system the body could heal itself in just about any situation.  In his mind, the Innate Wisdom of the body had the potential to win any healing game if just given a chance.  This concept is central to all successful Chiropractic care plans.

If you've gone a few days or a few weeks under care and see only minimal results, don't give up and quit.  Stick with it.  Have faith that your body has a winning game plan laid out for your recovery.  The power that made your body know all the plays needed to get you healthy and whole again.  It won't lose the game, if you don't let time run out!
