Finding the Right Key for the Job!

You try to stay active, but you still feel stiff and locked up.  Getting out of bed in the morning is a major feat and it takes a good 15 minutes to start moving freely.  Could it be arthritis?  Do you need a new mattress?  Should you consult a physical therapist, an osteopath or maybe some other master spinal locksmith?

In your case, a Chiropractor may be the one holding the right key.  In addition to alleviating nerve stress, one of the positive effects of Chiropractic adjustments is the restoration of normal joint motion.  Unlike gross manipulative therapy, as done by PT's and DO's, a specific Chiropractic adjustment targets ONLY the parts of the spine that need work.  Determining what segment to move, when to deliver the adjustment and how much force to use requires a skill set taught only in a reputable Chiropractic College.

You wouldn't use a sledge hammer to bust open your front door if the right key was handy to unlock it safely.  The same goes for your spine.  When it comes to unlocking a tough, painful back it's best to seek the advice of a master spinal locksmith (a DC) who knows what they're doing.  In the long run you'll save time, money and frustration hiring the right person for the job.

Adjustments are like stitches....they don't actually "Heal You"

If you were the unfortunate recipient of a nasty cut, you most likely made the trip to a local  ER for some stitches.  After a little local anesthetic and some skilled suturing, your cut looks a lot cleaner.  Even better, after a few days when the stitches come out, you can barely notice that an open wound was once there.  So did the stitches do the healing?

Stitches and Chiropractic Adjustments have one thing in common... neither actually do the healing.  Sure, both are provided when an injury takes place.  But both are designed to only create a 'cleaner' environment for the intelligent, healing power inside you body to do the job.  Stitches line up cut skin edges to mend and adjustments line up misaligned vertebrae to ease nerve pressure, but it's the Power of Life coursing through you and time that does the healing.

The next time you come in for an adjustment to instantly fix your headache, your sciatica or your sleeping problems, understand that it isn't the adjustment that produces the results.  It only improves the environment for the healing to take place.  It takes your Innate Healing Power and time to get the job done.

"You Can Heal It, We Can Help...."

Spring time is outdoor project time and that means more trips to the local home building center. The largest of them all, Home Depot, attributes its success and growth (nearly 2,000 stores in the Us, Canada and Mexico) to one simple concept, Independence. Their motto, "you can build it, we can help" celebrates that spirit.

They've discovered when given the choice to pay someone to do a project or to just "do it yourself" many people choose the latter because of the sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and pride they feel from completing the job themselves. Not to mention, saving some money in the process!

Our principled, chiropractic philosophy shares the same concept. When given the choice to have a "doctor" heal you with drugs or surgery from the outside or to "heal it yourself" from the inside, most people would rather choose INDEPENDENCE and heal the problem on their own.

When we tell our patients, "you can heal it, we can help" we profess an innate truth that healing is a do it yourself job, and all we do as chiropractors is open the lines of communication to help. Life heals as long as there's no interference.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Kids

An increase in chronic childhood disease is part of the reason parents today seek alternative health care for kids. Chiropractic care is an effective and affordable program by licensed providers that addresses children's health conditions associated with the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Gentle, noninvasive and drug free, chiropractic adjustments treat, resolve and prevent a wide range of health problems. Recent research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) found spinal correction therapy safe and successful in treating children of all ages.

Acute Conditions

Acute conditions may result from birth trauma, sports mishaps and accidental injury. Chiropractic care benefits children by correcting the spinal alignment to improve their overall health. When vertebral joints are misaligned during birth or from a blow or fall, muscle tissue and nerves may also be affected. Spinal adjustment frees joints, restores motion and relieves nerve pressure, which may be the cause of additional ailments. Parents report successful treatment of children's health issues such as acute earache, upper respiratory infection, muscle pain, neck pain and accident trauma. Spinal manipulation for children as young as newborn babies is an alternative treatment for the discomfort of colic and other digestive disorders as well.

Chronic Conditions

Parents surveyed by the ICPA reported behavioral improvement for kids who saw a chiropractor, as well as improved sleep and stronger immune systems. Although scientific evidence in these areas is still inconclusive, the growing number of those seeking children's health care from chiropractors (up 8.5% since 1991, according to the American Chiropractic Association) is a positive endorsement of its benefits. Chiropractic America reports that natural, drug-free chiropractic care is sometimes more effective than traditional medical approaches for chronic earache, scoliosis and neck pain. Headaches and sleep disorders of nonspecific causes respond well to spinal adjustments, which affect and repair interrupted neural pathways. Asthma and allergy symptoms and patterns of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may also be treatable with chiropractic.

Prevention

Success in these areas has implications for chiropractic care's preventive capacity. Periodic ongoing adjustments at a young age may help stave off the above ailments before they begin. Proper spinal alignment now may delay or prevent degenerative bone or joint disease, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. In addition to maintaining children's health, regular visits to the chiropractor also instill the value of proactive health care in kids. They'll be more likely to monitor and manage their health as they grow up and less likely to be afraid or in denial of any health problems. Encouraging good lifelong health habits is one of chiropractic's best benefits for kids.

Chiropractic: A natural and effective way to treat hearing loss

Chiropractic medicine has long been considered a natural and effective way in which to treat complications involving the musculoskeletal system. For many adults, the use of spinal adjustments provides not only relief from pain associated with acute and chronic injury, but is also an effective way in which to prevent pain from developing.
For some chiropractic patients, however, there is a unique basis on which to seek chiropractic treatment. In those adults who suffer from hearing loss, there may be some therapeutic benefit to the treatment provided by a chiropractor. For those with a hearing loss on the right side, there is belief that some chiropractic treatments provide for an improvement to this hearing loss.

If you suffer from a hearing loss, especially on the right side, you may want to consider chiropractic care. Using spinal adjustments to the thoracic spine, at T6, the S-I joint, and to the cervical region, at C2-C4, you may notice an improvement in your hearing almost immediately. While this type of alternative healing is not effective for all hearing losses, there are many patients who are willing to attempt the treatment and often find some improvement is realized.

The underlying process by which it is believed that chiropractic care is effective in some adults, lies in the belief that our auditory system is considered plastic in nature. What this refers to is the ability of the auditory system to adapt and respond to particular stimuli, such as music, language and speech. When spinal adjustments are administered in the chiropractor's office, there is a change in the balance of central nervous system excitatory and inhibitory responses, thus resulting in a change to the nervous system and the auditory processing.

Chiropractic care has been shown to be a powerful method of stabilizing and enhancing self-healing ability.

Our body is in a constant and never ending struggle for survival. Scientists estimate that each of our cells must withstand around 10,000 individual assaults from reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals. Amazingly, the body has an incredible system of self-healing that withstands the onslaught and rebuilds what has been damaged. Chiropractic care has been shown to be a powerful method of stabilizing and enhancing this self-healing ability.

The central nervous system is the primary system that controls all function and healing within the body. This flow of nerve energy from the brain to the body coordinates all 75 trillion cells to action. The brain is then fed through movement information that it receives from skin, joint, & muscle receptors. This movement information is called "proprioception." The brain depends on adequate proprioception for optimal function.

Physical nerve stress occurs when the spinal bones are twisted or thrown out of alignment. This is caused every day by macro traumas such as falls, car accidents, & sporting activities. Micro traumas such as bad posture, repetitive movements, and poor sleeping habits can damage the spine & nervous system as well. Physical nerve stress causes a deficiency in healthy brain-body signaling and an increased release of the stress hormone cortisol. This disrupts the body's ability to heal.

Chiropractic adjustments remove this built-up pressure on the nervous system allowing the body to heal as it was designed. Many studies have shown chiropractic care to be a powerful form of anti-aging.

Chiropractic Care Naturally Treats Colic

Colic is defined as inconsolable crying in an infant for as least three hours a day, at least three days a week, for at least three weeks. A colicky baby typically presents with a loud piercing cry, flexed legs, tensed abdominal muscles, and clenched fingers. It typically starts around three weeks of age and lasts until around three months but sometimes lasts for as long as six months. Approximately 10-20% of babies are affected by colic. Doctors diagnose colic based on the previously mentioned "Rule of 3" and after ruling out diseases that may make a baby cry uncontrollably. Parents of infants with colic report significantly higher stress levels than parents whose babies don't have colic. The stress and frustration of trying to soothe a colicky baby may interfere with mother-baby bonding and can increase the risk of postpartum depression. In addition, colicky babies are more likely to be victims of child abuse and shaken baby syndrome. Despite the research done on colic there is no known cause, which can make treatment difficult. Chiropractic care has shown some of the best results, with 94% of colicky babies demonstrating improvement with chiropractic adjustments.

Research on chiropractic care and colic has shown significant benefits over other treatments such as dietary changes, medication, and infant positioning. A randomized clinical trial published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that "Spinal adjustments are effective in relieving infantile colic". For this study the researchers randomly assigned infants diagnosed with colic into two groups. One group received chiropractic care for two weeks and the other group was given the anti-gas medication dimethicone for two weeks. The babies in the chiropractic group showed a 67% decrease in crying while the babies on medication showed a 38% decrease in crying.

Another study with 316 children also showed significant improvement in colic in response to chiropractic care. This prospective study used diaries from mothers of colicky babies to track the amount of crying. The three month long study showed a "satisfactory result of spinal adjustment therapy in 94% of the cases". The improvements occurred after an average of only three adjustments within two weeks.

Chiropractic care is a conservative, gentle, and a very successful option for treating infants with colic. Chiropractic adjustments for infants are specific, gentle, and safe.

A Healthy Spine Means...A Healthier Digestive System

Over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs to relieve heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other digestive disorders. These symptoms of abnormal digestive are becoming increasingly more prevalent in our society. Science and research have shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to this modern-day epidemic.

The nervous system controls digestive function from several different regions. The vagus nerve which courses out of the brain stem and runs near the atlas bone innervates all the major organs of digestion and functions to stimulate the digestive process. Other major areas controlling the pace of digestion include the sympathetic nerves coming out of the thoracic & lumbar regions and the sacral parasympathetic nerve fibers. Spinal misalignment in any of these regions can lead to neurological compromise and altered digestive function.

Wellness oriented chiropractors search for the location of such spinal misalignments termed `subluxations.` A specific chiropractic adjustment realigns the altered regions and restores nerve supply to the deficient organs. This approach honors the body's innate ability to heal and works to harmonize this incredible life force in order to enhance organ function & quality of life.

Several studies have demonstrated the power of chiropractic adjustments restoring optimal function in individuals with digestive disturbances. In a published case study, a young woman had been afflicted with IBS symptoms once or twice a week for 5 years. After one adjustment she noticed an easing of symptoms and within a short time all her digestive problems disappeared. When the report was published 2 years later she was still symptom free.

A 2008 study demonstrated how effective chiropractic care is for infants with digestive disturbances. Researchers chose three infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements from once a week to once every 3 or 4 days. Parents of these infants had tried several different laxatives and other procedures recommended by their medical staff. They had also followed specific dietary changes and the use of cod liver oil and mineral oil without any results.

Spinal Adjustments Can Lower Your Blood Pressure!

Chiropractic adjustments work to harmonize the body's natural systems by realigning the spinal bones and removing pressure and congestion within the nervous system. This process decreases the physiological stress response and restores optimal function and healing to the body. Along with many other health issues, chiropractic care has shown to consistently achieve remarkable results in helping to stabilize blood pressure.

The nervous system is what allows our internal physiology to adapt to the stresses and demands of the external environment. The skull and spine surround and protect the nervous system and bear the consistent stress of gravity every day. When the external stressors become too great there is compromise in the spinal structure and resulting interference in the nervous system. This interference is termed subluxation. Subluxation causes the nervous system to move out of balance and towards sympathetic (fight or flight) dominance. This process increases stress hormone secretion, inflammatory processes, and blood vessel tone. For many individuals this results in higher blood pressure. Chiropractic adjustments remove subluxation and restore harmony to the nervous system allowing the body to stabilize and heal appropriately.

In 1988, a double blind study of 75 patients was performed to fully analyze the reports that chiropractic care could help stabilize blood pressure in patients. Within this study, one group of patients with elevated blood pressure received adjustments to the thoracic spine area. Another group received placebos (movements that seemed to be adjustments but were not), and a 3rd group received no treatment. The result was that the adjusted group experienced decreases in both systolic & diastolic blood pressure while no change was noted in either the control or placebo group.

The Brain is the Master Control System..........

The brain is the master control system for the entire body. It sends and receives a complicated frequency of signals with the body that dictate the function of the body. When there is interference in this neurological feedback loop, it alters the environment the brain perceives itself to be in; this consequently changes the adaptation process the brain orchestrates throughout the body. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to enhance the sensorimotor integration of the brain with the body.

Many experts have hypothesized that increased stress cycles in the body produce the environment for un
easiness and eventually disease within the body. Stress can come from a variety of sources in the mental/emotional form, chemical form, and physical realm. When the body is under increased stress it responds by increasing its sympathetic tone. This means the body shunts itself into "fight or flight" survival based mode by altering cardiovascular & endocrine function to get itself ready for dynamic activity.

Increased sympathetic tone causes a release of stress hormones such as adrenalin, epinephrine, and cortisol. This is the same response we get when we are anxious or exercising. This is okay if it is for a short period of time; however, when the stress lasts longer than expected it exhausts the body and causes a state of uneasiness to manifest.

When the brain sends information to the organs, muscles, and tissues of the body, this is called efferent neurological flow. In return, the afferent flow of information includes all the messages sent to the brain from skin, muscle, joint, and organ receptors. This afferent/efferent neurological loop is how the body is able to respond and adapt appropriately to its environment.

The ramifications of increased stress hormones in the body include overworked adrenal glands, lowered immunity, decreased digestive functions, fatigue, & blood pressure disturbances. Increased cortisol levels also cause ligament laxity by stripping critical proteins from the tendon and ligament structures. This causes joint weakness throughout the body, including the spine and extremities, making them much more susceptible to injury.

Subluxation is a term used to describe mechanical compression and irritation to spinal joints and nerves. Subluxation scrambles the neurological feedback loop by causing altered rhythms of neurological flow. Subluxations are caused by trauma, poor posture, or increased chemical and emotional stresses.

Subluxations are a physical stress on the body and therefore increase the sympathetic tone, so the body shunts its energy toward the fight or flight system. If the subluxation(s) are not corrected they continue to produce this increased stress response. This increases cortisol and causes greater joint & ligament laxity in the spine and extremities making them more susceptible to injury. Additionally, increased long-term stress on the body greatly accelerates the degenerative processes of the spine and joints leading to osteoarthritis.
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to normalize spinal afferent/efferent processes to their proper resting tone. This is like hitting the reset button on the computer when it is malfunctioning. The computer is allowed to pause and reprocess itself. Chiropractic adjustments stop the stress response and restore normal hormonal and cardiovascular function to the body. This allows the body to reset itself and begin healing the damage that was done in the body due to chronic stress cycles.

The two most important things to us............

The two most important things to us are your health, and our reputation.  In reality these two things are linked together.  If our patients do not get results, it is not good for our reputation or for chiropractic.  We have built our practice on getting results.  It is very important that each and every patient we care for has the maximum chance for the best results.

Chiropractic has a great track record of helping people.  But one of the cornerstones to getting such good results is cooperation between the doctor and the patient.  Keeping your schedule of appointments is the major responsibility of the patient.  The largest cause of less than expected results is failure to follow the recommended appointment schedule.

All healing comes from within each patient.  What the chiropractor does is make adjustments to the spine to remove nerve interference caused from subluxations.  Subluxations are areas of interference to the nervous system caused by pressure or irritation from spinal bones.  In order to correct subluxations a sufficient amount of time and work is needed to make the changes to spinal structures.

When someone has crooked teeth, and they get braces, they need to wear those braces on their teeth continually for up to several years.  In chiropractic, we do not put little braces on each spinal bone to pull them into position.  To make a correction most spines require a series of adjustments to start the process changing spinal structures.  These schedules are specifically designed for the spine of each patient.  Missing appointments and not following your schedule, greatly reduces your chance for correction of your subluxations.

If your results are as important to you as they are to us, please make every attempt to make every visit you are scheduled for.  We consider correcting subluxations to be a very high priority.   Missing visits will slow or even stop your progress.  After all, you came to us for results.  Getting the care you need to correct your subluxations is essential.  After all, our reputation, and your health depends on it.
