What was that Pop?

Rapid stretching at the spinal joint results in significant therapeutic intervention. The exact nature of the intervention is what chiropractic researchers are just beginning to understand. On one level, muscle and ligaments stretch, blood circulation increases, and nerve fibers fire rapidly at the moment of the chiropractic adjustment. But the picture is more complicated. To understand this complexity, we need to return to the spinal joint and its neuroanatomy; the anatomy of the nerves and the nervous system. This includes the stimulation of mechanoreceptors (responds to mechanical pressure) and the stretching of muscle receptors called muscle spindles, all of which are stimulated by the chiropractic adjustment.

During the adjustment, the low back has undergone quick and gentle stretching of the spinal joint. The patient may hear a cracking or popping noise as the joint is opened. Research has proved that small pockets of air or bubbles are found in the tissue fluid surrounding a joint capsule. When the joint tissues are stretched during a chiropractic adjustment, the pockets of air 'pop' creating a cracking sound.
When the patient gets up from the table, she feels more movement in her lower back. The muscles may still be sore and tight, but spinal motion is improved. She will return to the chiropractor for two or three additional sessions that include muscle therapies and adjusting. Each session will provide more relief. The chiropractor may suggest preventive care such as specific exercises and ergonomic tips on how to correctly bend and lift. Preventive care of this type helps to maintain spinal motion. A follow-up visit may be suggested at three-month intervals.

Free Your Spine and the Rest will Follow...

You can’t sleep, your energy levels are low and you’re finding it harder to make it through your day. Your doctor insists there’s nothing wrong but you still feel like something’s weighing you down. Maybe it’s time to call the Chiropractor…

Chiropractors understand how daily stress can weigh down your nerve system like a ball and chain. Repetitive physical, chemical and emotional stress can subtly cause mis-alignments in your spine called Subluxations. The resulting pressure on your nerve system from uncorrected subluxations can lead to symptoms of fatigue, restlessness and mental fog. The solution… get adjusted! Unlocking your spine with regular Chiropractic care can restore your lost energy, vitality and alertness.

You don’t have to be a prisoner to stress. If you’re feeling sluggish, weak and bogged down from the challenges of life, FREE YOUR SPINE and the rest will follow. Break the chains of Subluxations with regular Chiropractic care and reach your potential today.

And Remember...A healthier spine means a healthier you!

Tips To Help Your Healing ~~~~~Naturally~~~~~ Part 3

Playing the Doctor ~ Please Don't

- Avoid rubbing, probing, or "poking" in the area where the doctor adjusts. Allow the body time to heal.
- Avoid sudden twists or turns of movement beyond normal limits of motion, especially of the neck.
- Avoid extreme bending of your spine in any direction; avoid reaching or other overhead work.
- Participate in simple exercisses to strenghten your body, but avoid jarring activites which place stress on your neck spine.

Bathing

- When bathing, sit rather than recline in the tub. Lying your back against the tub may cause a vertebrae to slip out of it's normal postion. If you are tired and wish to relax it's better to be in bed.

Rest

- Set aside a special time each day for complete mental and physical relaxation. This is important in the restoration- as maintenance-of normal health.
- Be sure to get plenty of sleep to allow your body to recuperate and repair.
- Sleep on your back or on your side with your legs flexed slightly, not drawn up tightly. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Raise your head off the pillow when changing positions.
- Do not sleep sitting in a chair or in cramped quarters. Lie down in a bed when it is time to sleep.

Tips To Help Your Healing ~~~~~Naturally~~~~~ Part 2

Getting Out of Bed
-Lying Down: Keep the torso straight, lay down on ither side, bringing the feet up, knees and ankles together. Use the arms to help the upper body. Reverse getting into bed.

Sitting
- Posture should be upright, not slouched.
-La-Z boy chairs don't bend where you do; buy a rocker instead.
- When working at at desk, elevate working materials to avoid neck fatigue.
-When sitting, choose a chair that has adequate firmness to hold your weight comfortably, and then sit straight. Avoid too soft, overstuffed chairs.
- Cross legs only at the ankles, not at the knees. Crossing your legs at the knees could aggravate existing back condition as well  as interfere with the circulation to the lower limbs.

Pillows
-Have your pillow checked by this office.
-Use it correctly as directed.
- Have the correct filling amount.
-Have the correct type of filling.
-Spine problem + bad pillow + bad position= rest (sometimes)
- Healthy Spine + correct pillow+ correct position= quality rest and healing.
_The ideal pillow is one which supports your head so that your neck vertebrae will be level with the rest of your spine. Avoid sleeping on two pillows; never lie on a couch with your head on the armrest.

Tips To Help Your Healing ~~~~~Naturally~~~~~ Part 1

Natural herbs, spices, and oils are not the only remedy you should be consious about when healing. Your everyday practices and routines can have a direct impact on your healing.

Vehicles
- Sit on the edge of the seat when getting in, then swing both legs together, pivoting on an axis.
-Do Not put one leg in first then sit down heavily.
-If lenght of seat is to close to the dashboard, move it back, when getting out so it's ready when getting back in. Particularly important for patients with low back problems.

The Phone
-Switch hands when using the phone.
-Do not cradle the phone in the crook of your neck. It will destabilize the cervical spine and require more care.
-Secretarial and salespeople who use the phone a should look inyo purchasing a light weight headset.

Lifting
-Everyone knows the correct way to lift; most of us don't do it!
-There are cirumstances where it is difficult to lift correctly, particularly getting bags in or out of the car. The bumper does not allow one to bend the knees. Bring the grocery bag to you first and lift carefully.
- If it is repetitive lifting, make it Easier! Take breaks. Use equipment to help.

Posture
Correct posture, or the attempt, should be part of the healing patients' regimen.
-Sitting should be upright, not slouched.
-Walking be with the head level or slightly elevated, not looking at the ground.
-If good posture can not be maintained, use cushions, upright chairs, or other equipment to assist you.
- If it is repettive lifting, make it easier! Take breaks. Use equipment to help.

Beds
- Waterbeds tend to become a problem once the patient has initiated spinal care. Among the several reasons why waterbeds irritate healing spines are temperature and lack of support.
-Prior to begining chiropractic care, a combination of spine -related problems, poor pillow, and poor beds will still allow rest. After initiation of care, a good pillow, bed, and chairs are essential for getting rest and healing.
-Sleep on a firm mattress, preferably one whhich neither too hard or too soft, but just firm enough to hold your body level, while soft enough that your shoulders and hips depress into the mattress.

"Do You Smell Something Burning?"

A family medical doctor of a patient told him there are 3 stages of pain.  First the doctor explains the pain is bad enough to catch your attention.  The next stage the pain is bad enough that it takes hold of you, and in the final stage the pain is so bad it compels you to do something about it.”
So my patient then asks his doctor, “when it gets to stage three what should I do?”  Without a blink his doctor turns to him and says “take some Motrin…” (True and sad story)

The worst of all of this is that the patient actually thought his doctors advice was good and in many instances, the public follows what the medical doctor tells them as factual.
So, just as I asked this patient, I ask you:   “if your smoke detector went off in your home, the 1st time it would probably catch your attention.  If it went off a 2nd time it would most likely take hold of you.  But if it went off a 3rd time and finally compelled you to do something, would you take the batteries out so you wouldn’t have to hear it anymore?  “Of course not,” he replied “that would be stupid…” He got the point!  Do you get the point?

The moral of the story… Symptoms are your body’s attempt to warn you to help save it. Masking your symptoms (whether it be pain, sciatica, headaches, fibromyalgia, acid reflux, stress, numbness or tingling, nausea, diarrhea or fever) with drugs doesn’t fix the problem, it actually makes the situation worse.
Think about this for a second:  if you went to the dentist, would you want him to just inject a painful cavity with Novocaine and leave the cavity?  You know the cavity might not hurt anymore, but the cavity would continue to get worse and you would want the dentist to fix the tooth.
It’s smarter to find the cause and deal with it the right way.  That’s why they call Chiropractors DC’s because we are Doctors of finding the Cause!  Chiropractors don’t just cover up your pain, we find the cause and correct it.

When You Have Tried Everything....................................

HI everyone.  It is amazing how often I hear "I don't know why I didn't try this sooner".  Very often people try Chiropractic last.  I am not sure why that is.  It seems reasonable to me to try a drugless and non-surgical option first.  Many people suffer from headaches, back pain, and chronic sickness for years before coming to our office to find a health solution.  Don't let your friends and loved ones wait.  If you know someone with a chronic health concern, have them call us.  We will do a consultation with them for free!!!  We will let them know if Chiropractic can help them.  If we can't help, we will find someone who can.

Exercise and Back Pain

A typical response to experiencing back pain is to take it easy - either staying in bed or at least stopping any activity that is at all strenuous. While this approach is understandable and may even be recommended in the short term, when done for more than a day or two it can actually undermine healing. Instead, active forms of back exercises are almost always necessary to rehabilitate the spine and help alleviate back pain.
When done in a controlled, gradual, and progressive manner, active back exercises distribute nutrients into the disc space and soft tissues in the back to keep the discs, muscles, ligaments and joints healthy. Consequently, a regular routine of lower back exercises helps patients avoid stiffness and weakness, minimize recurrences of lower back pain, and reduce the severity and duration of possible future episodes of low back pain.

Depending upon the patient’s specific diagnosis and level of pain, the back pain exercises and rehabilitation programs will be very different, so it is important for patients to see a spine specialist trained to develop an individualized program of back exercises and to provide instruction on using the correct form and technique.

To be effective, a patient’s program of back exercises should be comprehensive, working the whole body even if it targets the back. Two back exercises commonly advised by physical therapists to treat back pain are McKenzie exercises and dynamic lumbar stabilization.

" The Perfect Stress Reboot"........Ctrl, Alt, Adjust

Have you ever had to restart your PC after the hard drive froze from being overwhelmed?  You probably hit ‘Control+Alt+Delete’ to get your programs running smoothly again, right?  Well your human computer needs a periodic rebooting too, and Chiropractic Adjustments do just that.

Your Nerve System gets easily overwhelmed from everyday stress.  An urgent deadline at work, unexpected crisis with your children or any inconvenient change in your routine can act as an unsolicited stressor (spyware or a virus) that bogs down your nerves.  The result… your body begins to slow down, you feel like you’re running sluggish and eventually you “freeze up” with an illness.  Getting an adjustment is like hitting the Control+Alt+Delete buttons.  It clears your Nerve System of unwanted stress and gets things running smoothly again.

All the stress our grandparents experienced in a week, today we absorb in just 24 hours!  If you’re not making an effort to purge that tension from your human computer on a consistent basis, you’re asking for trouble.  Don’t wait until your hard drive crashes.  Get ‘rebooted’ routinely with Chiropractic care and stay ahead of the failure.   We’re looking out for you.
